I once knew a woman who would reply to the greeting ‘Good morning’ by saying ‘Good? What’s good about it?’. As you can imagine she was a great joy to be around.
One of the ways people have found to lift the spirit, and this time of year many people do need a lift, is to gain a sense of thankfulness. The old hymn goes ‘Count your blessings one by one’ and many folk who lived through the war would recount the small insignificant things they had to be thankful for. This, they said, gave them a boost when their future looked decidedly uncertain.
The Bible says this “Bless, give thanks, and gratefully praise God…” Psalm 68: 26
As you probably know by now there is an incredible sense of thankfulness around church at the moment after last week’s gift day. You raised the incredible sum of £40,000 and counting. You are an amazing people and my heart is full of gratitude to you. We’ll share more about this in church on Sunday.
Sometimes though we can’t find really big things to be thankful for and yet the Bible still encourages this sense of gratitude. For example, in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul states, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Somebody once came up with the following list to help us think about things we could express thankfulness for:-
1) For the teenager who is endlessly watching TV, because that means that he or she is at home and not on the streets.
2) For the taxes that I pay, because it means that I am employed.
3) For the mess to clean up after a church luncheon, because it means that I have been surrounded by Christian friends.
4) For the clothes that fit a little too snug, because it means I have enough to eat.
5) For my shadow that watches me work, because it means I am out in the sunshine.
6) For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing, because it means I have a home.
7) For all the complaining I hear about the government, because it means that we have freedom of speech.
8) For the parking spot I find at the far end of the car park, because it means I am capable of walking and that I have been blessed with transportation.
9) For my huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.
10) For the lady behind me in church that sings off key, because it means that I can hear.
11) For the pile of laundry and ironing, because it means I have clothes to wear.
12) For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means I have been capable of working hard.
13) For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am alive.
14) For too much e-mail, because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.
15) And finally ….. for the God of Heaven who cares not only for me but for all mankind (Acts 17:24-28; Philippians 4:19; 2 Peter 3:9).
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday where we will begin the Advent season together. You may like to read 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9 and Mark 13: 24-37 as preparation.
See you Sunday – every blessing, Lee
